Isola del Giglio

For size and population, the Isola del Giglio is the second largest island of the Tuscan archipelago after Elba. Measuring approximately 21 Sqm, the Isola del Giglio, with its distinctive granite profile, stands 15 km directly opposite the shores of the Cape Argentario. Known back in Greek times as Aigilion (maybe for the large goat population), it was almost certainly settled by the Etruscans. Later, the Romans settled there, who began to quarry the rich granite deposits.

Very mountainous, the island has a dry and mild climate, ideal for growing grapes and olives. Production of the local wine, the amber coloured Ansonica, was recorded by the Roamans. The vegetation consists essentially of Mediterranean maquis and evergreens, while oak and chestnut trees thrive in the higher elevations. Wild hare and migratory birds make up the island fauna.
Province: Grosseto. Alt.: 405 m - Inhab.: 1454.
