Camping and villages: Arezzo
The most inland of all the Tuscan capitals, Arezzo is located in the hills of the Alpe di Poti, which divides the Valdarno Superiore from the upper Val Tiberina to the edge of a basin, the meeting point between the Casentino, the Valdichiana and the Valdarno Superiore. Thanks to its favourable geographic position, it is a busy commercial port, site of industries and a tradition of craftsmanship specialized in gold working.
The city is also an important art centre and it is the birthplace of many illustrious names, such as Petrarca, Guido Monaco, Pietro Aretino and Vasari. The Etruscan settlement, known as Arretium, was settled in the area today occupied by the parish church, a fortress and the cathedral. The first ring of walls dates back to 4th century BC. During the Roman age, the city played an important military role, due to its strategic position as a road hub of ancient Etruria.
