Volterra

An ancient and noble city, full of Etruscan relics and Roman and medieval monuments, Volterra is founded on steep hill, deeply marked by the processes of erosion, between the Valdera and the Val di Cecina. The Porta dell'Arco and visible traits of the cyclopic city walls are a reminder of the Etruscan roots of Volterra. Evidence of this history are the new city walls, the Rocca Vecchia, the Piazza dei Priori, heart of the medieval city with the eponymous palace and the annexed Torre di Grande Podestà, the baptistery, and the duomo.

Still standing are many tower-houses of the medieval town, among which the 13th century tower-house of the Buonparenti family and the tower-house of the Toscano, surrounded by many beautiful palaces such as Palazzo Solaini and Palazzo Viti. Another point of interest is the diocesan Museum of Holy Art, also called "Museum of the works of the Duomo", the Guarnacci Museum, the Florentine gate with important relics of the Roman theatre and the Selci Gateway.
