Discover Maremma: The Traditional Way

Camping in Tuscany, equestrian holidays, horse camps

Whilst camping in Tuscany, discover the beautiful Maremma region in the most traditional and exciting way possible: on horseback. Visit a horse camp, add an equestrian theme to your holiday, and get yourself in the saddle! In the southern part of Tuscany, you will find the beautiful and unspoilt Maremma region.

There is a huge variety of territory to explore here, so for an unforgettable activity as part of your camping trip in Tuscany, why not choose to explore it on horseback. Including the provinces of Livorno and Grosseto, this stunning area of Tuscany is home to a wide range of geographical features, such as incredible sandy beaches, hills and marshes, woods, natural thermal baths, olive groves and vineyards.

The list goes on and on. This area is not only rich in natural wonders, but also in history and culture. Traces of the Etruscans and Romans can be found in Maremma, and signs of the middle ages can also be seen here, in the form of high towers, castles and walled towns. In Maremma, one of the most popular and most enjoyable activities is horse riding, and many go to this region for equestrian holidays.

The area is known for its horses, due to extensive use of them in the past. Traditionally, all activities in Maremma were carried out on horseback, whether it be simple journeys or hard labour. Because of this reliance on horses, a local thoroughbred developed over the territory. The Maremman horse is one that is strong, full of stamina, and really quite magnificent. There are plenty of horse riding tours and horse riding lessons in the area, and most of them cater for the absolute beginner to experts.

The best tours available will usually have introductory lessons included. Visiting and discovering this territory is a must, and the most unforgettable way to do it is on horseback, as you can reach some of the places that a car or bus can’t take you to. As your guide leads the way, you can experience a true feeling of freedom and relaxation, as you get back to nature, and see Maremma as the ‘butteri’ cowboys do.

There are many centres where you can take a tour. The Tuscan Riding Centre Cavallo Maremma has guides who take you trekking over many different types of land. They also do horse camp holidays for children. The Azienda regionale Agricola di Alberese offers excursions on horseback where you can learn all about the ‘buttero’ cowboy, and the San Jacob Centre at Marina di Grosseto has courses and workshops for all levels, and special ‘bardigiani’ horses, which are suitable for children.

So whether it’s an equestrian holiday you want, or just fancy trying something new, the experience of exploring this incredible region on the back of a beautiful Maremma horse can’t be beaten. Your camping trip in Tuscany simply has to include this unforgettable activity.
