Amiata

The campground is OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND, and is situated on one of the slopes of Mount Amiata, a volcanic cone that rises up from the heart of the hills south of Tuscany, between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto.

The town of Castel del Piano, at an altitude of approximately 650 m, is nestled in splendid chestnut forests, vineyards and olive groves and is distinguished for its particularly pleasant climate throughout the year.

It is just as easy to drive to the campground from either the Cassia trunk road, turning off in the direction of Mount Amiata at Valdorcia, or from the 223 Grosseto-Siena trunk road, by exiting at Paganico and taking provincial road 160 that connects Casteldelpiano to Arcidosso.

In the campground, which has a high density of trees, there are pitches divided by bushes and equipped with power outlets (6.3A), 5 wash room facility blocks with free hot water, washing machines, dryer, clothes lines and an area for RVs and large vehicles.

The campground also offers 24 masonry living units:

They are all furnished, heated, with bathroom, kitchen and veranda. 10 of these are equipped for the physically challenged.

A feature of the campground is that there are no architectural barriers, and therefore enables physically challenged individuals to stay here.

What to do

The campground is located in the centre of an area with many hot springs. It is therefore easy to recommend spending at least one relaxing day in the sulphur water of Bagni San Filippo, Bagno Vignoni, Saturnia or San Casciano ai Bagni.
The district of Amiata is particularly suited for excursions and trips on foot or horse into the uncontaminated nature of the chestnut and beech forests.

Numerous country fêtes are held during the summer-autumn seasons to showcase local products and cuisine: there are country fêtes for mushrooms, acquacotta, picio, savoury biscuits, chestnuts and chestnut beer, new oil, grapes, bruschettas, potatoes, etc... there is the “Cantine Aperte” (open vineyards) Festival for excellent local wines, the Pine festival, the Moon festival, etc. and naturally the Palio delle Contrade in Casteldelpiano on September 8. 

There are also special events (for ex. the live nativity scene, the Focarazza or the Befana) held during the Christmas holidays in the various villages.

To See

The luxuriant greenery of the Amiata and the rugged beauty of Mount Labbro are well-appreciated for their enchanting views, in addition to bird and wildlife watching activities. It is ideal for enthusiasts to bring a camera and binoculars.

A visit to the Amiata Natural Park, Mount Labbro and the Wildlife Park is a definite must. At the same time it is a good idea to visit the most typical towns of this mountainous area, such as Abbadia S.Salvatore with its splendid Abbey, Santa Fiora with its famous 'robbiana' pottery, the Aldobrandesco Castle in Arcidosso and the various art shows that are held there, Piancastagnaio with its Fortress and Soffioni, etc.

Do not miss a visit to the Sant'Antimo Abbey either, or the ancient city of Montalcino. Valdorcia is also splendid, with its best-known and most picturesque villages undoubtedly being San Quirico, with its Horti Leonini, Castiglione d’Orcia, with the Tentennano Fortress, and the famous Pienza.
