A famous city of thermae of the Valdinievole, it has been one of the most important mineral springs in Italy and one of the best known in Europe since the 1800s. The present-day Montecatini Alto Castle holds artistic interest; bequethed to the Lucchese church in the 11th century, it one had 25 towers and 7 entrance gates and was the object of dispute between the Florentines and Lucchese, Pisan-Lucchese Ghibellines and Florentine Guelphs.
