It is the best known and most popular summer and winter tourist destination of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The tourist district, with a superior level of services, extends to the valleys of Luce, Scoltenna, Sestaione and Lima, surrounded by a splendid circle of Apennine peaks (Alpe Tre Potenze, Monte Rondinaio,Monte Giovo, Monte Cimone and Libro Aperto). There are numerous downhill slopes for skiers, with plenty of ski-lifts, in addition to trails for cross-country skiing through dense verdant forests and fire woods.

Located in the mountain pass of the Apennines between Tuscany and Emilia, the small mountain community was born with the construction of the Strada Regia per Modena, also known as the via Giardini-Ximenes, constructed in the 1700s at the behest of Leopold I of Tuscany and Francesco III d'Este of Modena. For construction of the road, an enourmous fir tree had to be cut down, hence the name of Abetone.
