Marina di Carrara overlooks the sea in the northernmost part of the Apuane coast, quite close to the border with Liguria. In the summer, it is popular tourist destination. The wide sandy beach is interrupted by a mercantile port, construcetd in the 1700s to serve the needs of the marble industry.
