Isola di Capraia

The most western of the islands of the tuscan archipelago, it is also the closest to Corsica (31 km from Capo Corso) and stretches out for 20 Sqm. Already known to the Greeks as Aigilion, it was renamed Capraia by the Romans due to the many wild goats that once populated it. A base for pirates in the 1st century BC, a refuge of monks and hermits in the 4th century, at the end of the 13th century it passed under Genoese rule and after 1815 became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. After 1872, the Isola di Capraia was partly used as an agricultural penal colony, which closed at the end of the 1980s. The third largest island after Elba and Giglio, it is volcanic in nature, evidenced by its dark glassy igneous rocks. The coasts are opened by natural coves and picturesque dovetails, presided over by ancient lookout towers. The Stagnone, a charming body of water near the crest, gives a home to several rare botanical species and many resident and migratory birds. The island is covered by a lush growth of maquis and its waters are abundant in fish.
