Take the plunge on Elba Island

As part of your camping holiday in Tuscany, make sure you don't miss the alluring Elba Island. Around 10 miles of the Tuscan coast, this breathtakingly beautiful island is the perfect location for diving. Whether you are a complete beginner, or already have plenty of diving experience, this Island is an incredible place to explore the depths of the mediterranean sea.

With a mild climate, delicious cuisine and unspoilt countryside, this particular part of Italy is simply stunning. Plus, its many beaches and rugged coastline, make Elba great for water based activities, and diving enthusiasts simply flock to the numerous diving spots available.

Elba offers not only the possibility to witness such diving beauty spots, complete with interesting fish and plant life, but also the chance to see some incredible shipwrecks, such as the wreck of the cargo ship Elviscot, which sank in a storm in 1972. Starting from the shore of the small beach of Pomente, you can discover this ship at 12 metres below the surface. This particular dive is definitely not to be missed, and furthermore, it's suitable for beginners due to the moderate depth.

Another noteworthy dive is the Junkers 52, which can be found near the lighthouse at Portoferraio. Shot down in 1994 and discovered in 1997, this aeroplane wreck is not only interesting in itself, but surrounding it are a host or large lobsters and moonfish. At 37 metres down, and in open sea, this dive is a little more difficult, and therefore may be suited to the more experienced diver.

Elba is also home to another famous wreck, namely that of a massive merchant ship, dating back to the first Roman empire. At 65 metres deep and 300 metres off shore, this 2000 year old ship was an astonishing discovery. While there is no rush to bring up this perfectly preserved shipwreck, diving on this incredible site isn't yet available, as research is still ongoing.

Yet with over 30 other diving locations available around the island, you are still spoilt for choice. You'll find plenty of dive centres to choose from, and there are diving spots suitable for all levels, even for those who have done little or no diving previously. It really is a scuba paradise. So why not give it a go? As part of your camping trip on Elba Island, what better way to get closer to nature, than to experience the sheer beauty of Elba Island below the surface of its sublime mediterranean waters? Go on, take the plunge!
