Talamone

At the southernmost point of the park of Maremma is a rocky cape that just into the Tyrrhenian sea, forming a calm and sheltered gulf. Here stands Talamone, a fishing village whose residents live in homes clustered around the citadel, a fortress built by Siena in the 1400s. The ancient town of Talamone, called Tlamu by the Etruscans, stoods to the east of the current-day settlement. Known by the Romans as Telamon, it was the theatre of the battle of Campo Regio (in 225 BC). The castle was built between the 15th and 16th centuries, in grey stone with corner towers and a wide city wall, on a design by Baldassarre Peruzzi, Vecchietta and Aurelio Maria Lomi.
