Monte Argentario

Monte Argentario is a mountainous massif whose highest peak is Monte Telegrafo. Two belts of sand, the tomboli of Giannella and Feniglia, have tied it to the mainland, creating the lagoon of Orbetello. Since 1843, this cape has represented the municipality of Monte Argentario.

Building the road made it possible to cross the Giannella tombolo from Orbetello that leads to Argentario, getting a bird's eye view of the rocky coast, broken up by continuous rocky inlets. The only interruption along the jagged shoreline is the sandy beach of the Feniglia tombolo, while a short distance away from the coast are the islands of Argentarola, Rossa and Isolotto.

The great citadel of Porto Santo Stefano, the citadel of Porto Ercole, the two forts, Fort Stella and Fort Filippo, and the Ciana tower remind visitors that Argentario one belonged to the Spanish Territories and was under Spain's dominion after the middle of the 1500s.
