A seaside resort famous for its expansive pine woods and its fine sand braches, it is the northernmost of the coastal towns of the Grosseto Maremma. It is located at the centre of the gulf of Follonica, which extends from the Cape Piombino to Punta Ala. The origins of Follonica's settlement date back to the Roman times, and its name would seem to came from the Latin "Fullonica" (launderer), perhaps in reference to the fact that this was a major industry in this area.
