Located in the hills between the Greve and Ema valleys, the town is renowned for its traditional production of terracotta, called "il Cotto dell'Impruneta" and bricks for the building industry. The area has been settled since Etruscan and Roman times, but the community began to develop starting from the 19th century, when a sanctuary was founded there. The sanctuary was constructed to house the miraculous image of the Madonna, which popular tradition holds was the work of the evangelist, Luke.
