Bergamo, Italy
The two souls city
Bergamo (from berg-heim, city on the hill) is divided into two distinct halves connected by the two cable cars that have been running for over a century, a true rarity in Italy.
The magnificent Città Alta (upper city) on the hilltop, has a silent, reserved and relaxed aura, ideal for those who like to tour on foot. It is the Medieval town defended by Venetian walls protecting precious and exceptionally preserved treasures.
The Medieval Piazza Vecchia and the civic Campanone tower, the S.Maria Maggiore basilica, the Colleoni chapel and Rocca can't be missed.
Bergamo Bassa (the lower city) at the foot of the Città Alta, is the modern, dynamic working city home to many attractions like the Porta Nuova and Torre dei caduti, theCarrara art museum and theater named after the famous opera composer, Gaetano Donizetti.
Bergamo is perfect for a one or two-day visit. It is well-serviced by convenient shuttles to the international Orio al Serio airport, one of Italy's largest low cost air terminals.
