Located in the plains, traversed by the Ombrone River and quite close to he sea, it is the capital of the Maremma. A busy agricultural and industrial centre, it is crossroads for the railway and road network. Its history is marked by periods of great decline and abandon.
It was revitalized in the latter half of the 1700s when the Lorraines completed the work of reclaiming the swamplands begun by the Medicis and restored the city an important role.
