What to do
Among the numerous activities that one can enjoy in the area, there are many different types of trips:
  • Trips into the nature, to see the uncontaminated areas of the reserves in the district, i.e. the Natural Park of Maremma, Diaccia Botrona and Bandite di Scarlino. On foot, bike or horse back, with or without a guide, it is possible to visit these protected areas with all of their heritage of avifauna, rare plants and large mammals;
  • Food and wine trips, to discover  the traditional local products and the extensive network of small producers, such as the cooperative of vineyard owners of the tiny hamlets of the Maremma area, where one can stop to taste the local goods;
  • Trips to discover the best beaches. Naturally, the seaside is the centre of any holiday in Santa Pomata, which offers the possibility of visiting the coves between Punta Ala and Follonica, or travel southwards towards the magnificent 'tomboli' (lines of sand between islands) in the Orbetello Lagoon. It is also enjoyable to take a short trip to Giglio Island or the renowned beaches of Elba. The boats that make the crossing leave from the near by Punta Ala.
The most enjoyable activity to do at the Santapomata campground is simply visit the Maremma inland, as it is still an authentic district of great touristic interest. The great plains of wild countryside are, in fact, only dotted here and there with rare towns. Scarlino and Gavorrano are well worth a visit, as is the small hamlet of Ribolla, which was once famous for being an intense coal mining area, traces of which can still be seen, as "industrial archaeology", in the buildings of the town.
To See
Besides the old town of Castiglione della Pescaia, the surrounding area is rich in landscapes of arresting natural beauty and places of great historical and cultural interest: the Etruscan Sites of Vetulonia and Roselle and The hill village of Tirli. The Uccellina Game Reserve, with its beautiful naturalistic trails and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago are absolutely not to miss. Sailors can have a good time in Punta Ala, the perfect location for passionate about sailing.
